
Montreal’s Benjamin Deschamps is a sought after saxophonist, flutist, clarinettist, composer and arranger on the Montreal jazz scene. He was named Révélation Radio-Canada Jazz in 2017-2018.
As the leader of his own band, he won the Rimouski's Festi Jazz Grand Prize in 2013 and released his first record the following year, titled What Do We Know. In 2019, he received the Festival international de jazz de Montreal TD Grand Award Award, after being nominated twice before. Laureate of the Jazz Creation Award by the Montreal Council for the Arts in 2016, Deschamps released his second record, Demi-Nuit, in 2017. With his Quintet, he won the JPL Victo Jazz Award in 2019 and performed his music all around the provinces of Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes. In September 2018, he put together the music collective No Codes and released his third record of original music.
Recipient of a Jazz Performance Master’s degree from McGill University, Benjamin is a very active musician on both local and international jazz scenes. We can hear him as a sideman in the Rachel Therrien Quintet, with whom he toured in western Canada and in Mexico. We can also hear him in the Charles Trudel Ensemble, with whom he toured in France and Belgium. Benjamin is also a member of the JazzLab Orchestra, led by Alain Bédard, touring in 2019 in Canada, France, Italy and Poland.
Benjamin is also a very in-demand ensemble musician, accompanying pop artists and projects, such as Damien Robitaille, Steve Hill, Garou, the production Forever Gentlemen (Garou, Roch Voisine and Corneille), the tour for Mario Pelchat's album Les Prêtres as well as the Broadway show Beautiful: The music of Carol King.
